MIKE SMITH EARNS $1000.00 TO CLOSE OUT SKYLINE RACEWAY SEASON WITH TURBO BLUE IMCA MODIFIED VICTORY

-Chris Stull, Butch Green, George Brown, Nick Greist, Rich Wagner All Earn Victories At The Turbo

The Skyline Raceway closed out their 2011 racing season last Saturday night with the 24th annual running of the Turbo Blue Finale. Chris Stull put an exclamation pint on his championship season as he drove to victory in the 30 lap Sportsman feature event. Mike Smith collected the $1,000 top prize in the Pistol Chassis sponsored IMCA Modified feature. Butch Green drove to his first Skyline Raceway feature win of the season in the Street Stock division. George Brown scored a thrilling victory in the Junkyard Dogs with Richard Wagner earning his first Empire Sport Truck feature. Nick Greist closed out the 2011 season with a win in the Junkyard Pups division.

With the 24 car strong starting line-up set by the luck of the draw, Jim Rothwell and James Cornell pace the field to the final green flag of 2011 to start the 30 lap event. Rothwell grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and would lead the first two laps before third starting Chris Stull made his presence known, taking the top spot on the third circuit as the two veterans raced side by side down the backstretch. With Stull now leading the event, the race was on behind him as Rothwell came under pressure for the second spot from Kevin Jordan and Ryan Jordan.

That battle for the runner-up position was the best battle on the track as the race crossed the halfway point with Stull in control of the event. Both Kevin and Ryan Jordan were able to work past Rothwell for second and third as the three put on a show of hard, clean racing for the Skyline fans. Mechanical misfortunes would cost Ryan Jordan a top three position as he slowed on the backstretch and retired from the event. Over the closing laps, Kevin Jordan was able to close the gap on Stull a bit, but Chris was too strong and flashed under the checkered flag to pick up the win over Jordan. Early leader Jim Rothwell hung on to finish third with James Cornell fourth. Wade Decker completed the top five finishing order.

A full field of IMCA Modifieds also answered the call to the post for their 40 lap season finale event which was sponsored by Pistol Racing Chassis. The line-up for the final IMCA Modified feature of the season was set via a blind draw which put Mike Smith on the pole flaked by Mike Wilmot. Smith grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag with third starting Jerry Lobdell working past Wilmot into the runner-up position. Several early caution flags kept the field bunched tightly, but on each restart Smith was able to re-establish himself as the race leader with Lobdell continuing to be a persistent challenger. The two Skyline Raceway regulars would spend the entire 40 lap distance at the head of the field. Over the closing laps, Lobdell made a final run at Smith, pulling alongside of Mike several times, but was never able to quite complete the pass. Smith went on to score the win by a narrow margin over Lobdell. Kevan Cook finished third ahead of Gary Smith and Keystone State invader Eddie Sites.

The 20 lap Street Stock feature saw Butch Green drive to his first win of the season at the Skyline Raceway. Green started the event back in the 11th starting position but wasted little time in making his way to the front of the field. A couple of early cautions kept the field bunched up and Green was able to take full advantage, moving into the runner-up position behind race leader Chris Fisher by the time the race reached the halfway point. The second half of the event saw an intense three way battle at the head of the field as Green, Fisher, and Gene Sharpsteen all battled for the lead and the victory. After several laps of side by side racing, Green completed the winning pass on the 17th lap, slipping past Fisher. Once out front, Green led the final eight circuits to earn the win. Fisher and Sharpsteen raced side by side off the fourth turn on the final lap with Fisher just nosing out Sharpsteen for second with Gene settling for third. Jason Rhodes and Brent Miller finished fourth and fifth.

George Brown earned his first Skyline Raceway victory in the 20 lap Junkyard Dogs feature event. Brown and newly crowned Skyline Raceway track champion Todd Koegel raced each other hard the entire distance with some incredible racing between the to. The final turn of the race saw Koegel grab the lead with a well executed slide job. Koegel’s momentum carried him up the track, allowing Brown the opportunity to pull crossover move and duck back under Koegel. The two raced side by side off the final turn with Brown just managing to beat Koegel back to the line for the win. Koegel finished second and ran from his car to Brown’s in victory lane to offer congratulations. Howie Koegel finished third with Grayson Albanese fourth. Jake Fowlston finished fifth. Richard Wagner Jr.’s 13th place finish was the best among the Empire Sport Truck contingent, earning him his first career Empire Sport Truck victory.

Nick Greist closed out the Junkyard Pups season with a feature win in their 20 lap feature event. Grest held off a determined challenge from Dave Smith over the closing laps to score the win. Keith Potter finished third with Clem Underwood and Don Sinn rounding out the top five.

The 2011 racing season is now complete at the Skyline Raceway. Speedway staff and officials are already hard at work planning and preparing for the 2012 racing season. Log onto www.skylineracewayny.com for all of the latest news and information.

KENNY HAMMOND EARNS FIRST CAREER SKYLINE RACEWAY SPORTSMAN VICTORY

-Chris Stull (Sportsman and Rich Green (Street Stocks) clinch championships

Last Saturday night at the Skyline Raceway, Kenny Hammond drove t his first career Sportsman feature win as Chris Stull clinched the 2011 Sportsman division championship. Gene Sharpsteen earned his third Street Stock victory of the season as the Street Stock championship was also decided as Rich Green hung on to score the championship by a scant four point margin over Brent Miller. Jerry Lobdell topped the IMCA Modified division with Todd Koegel running his win total to eleven in the Junkyard Dogs class. Newly crowned champion Phil Burns celebrated his Junkyard Pups title by earning his third feature win. Timothy Vandermark topped the Young Pups division for the fifth time while Nick Greist came out on top of the Junkyard Pups elimination race.

Bobby Heintz and Ken Hammond brought the Sportsman field to the green flag with Hammond working past Heintz early in the event to establish himself as the race leader aboard his Hunts Auto Service sponsored entry. As Hammond established himself as the race leader, behind him the battle was on for second as Chris Stull was on the move, advancing quickly to move into a contending position. Stull was able to work past Hammond on the seventh lap to take over the race lead with Hammond, Kevin Jordan, Brian White, and John Morse all battling within the top five.

Stull appeared to be in control of the event until a lap 15 caution flag bunched up the field. On the restart, Hammond got the drop on Stull to retake the point lead as it was becoming apparent that Stull was having problems as he began to fade from the top five. The reason would become apparent a few laps later as Stull retired from the event a few laps later with a flat right rear tire. With Hammond now firmly in control of the event he would lead the rest of the way to score a popular first time feature win. Behind Hammond, John Morse was strong, driving to a season’s best runner-up finish. Brian White slipped past Kevin Jordan on the final lap to finish third with Jordan crossing the line fourth. Randy Shantel rounded out the top five finishing order.

Despite dropping from the event, Chris Stull locked up the 2011 Sportsman championship with his 14th place finish.

The IMCA Modified division took part in a special non-point event as several of Skyline’s top teams were not in attendance as they were participating in the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa for the weekend. As they have done all season, the IMCA Modifieds put on a show for the Skyline fans as Jerry Lobdell and track champion Chris Fleming locked up in a race-long battle. Lobdell got to the point early, but was under heavy pressure from Fleming over the second half of the event. Lobdell found the high side of the speedway to his liking with Fleming looking low in every corner. Fleming was able to pull alongside Lobdell several times, but each time Lobdell was able to utilize the momentum he built up running the top of the speedway to hang onto the lead. A final challenge off the final turn by Fleming fell just short as Lobdell took the checkered flag by a narrow margin over Fleming. Bump Scutt finished third with Glen Erwin fourth in his first Skyline appearance of the season. Joe Miles finished fifth, his first top five of 2011 since returning late in the season.

Gene Sharpsteen took advantage of a third place starting position to earn his third Street Stock victory of 2011. Sharpsteen drove to the lead early on, then survived a determined challenge from Scott Smith to earn the victory. Smith threw everything he had at Sharpsteen before settling for a strong second place run. Earl Zimmer finished third trailed by Brent Miller and Buck Mills. Rich Green drove to an eighth place finish to earn the 2011 Street Stock championship by four points over Brent Miller. Green’s championship season was notable in that he earned points in five different cars during the season.

In Junkyard Dogs action, Todd Koegel ran his win total to eleven in 2011 as the division’s champion utilized a late race pass of Chuck Culbertson to secure the victory. Culbertson was impressive in his first start of 2011, leading the majority of the event before settling for a strong runner-up finish. George Brown, Bill Leonard, and Dan Freelove rounded out the top five finishing order.

Newly crowned Junkyard Pups champion Phil Burns celebrated his championship by racing to his third win of the season. Burns survived a last lap restart and a determined challenge from Nick Greist to secure the win. Greist settled for a solid runner-up finish with Rick Sinsabaugh finishing third. Keith Potter and Bobby Wagner were fourth and fifth respectively. Nick Greist came home the winner of the special elimination race that closed out the night’s racing action.

The final Young Pups feature of the season fell to Timothy Vandermark. Vandermark grabbed the lead early and outraced Dylan Thompson to earn the win. Timothy Filkins finished third with newly crowned point champion Trevor Dudley fourth.

The 2011 racing season at the Skyline Raceway comes to an end on Saturday night with the 24th annual running of the Turbo Blue Finale. The IMCA Modifieds will take part in a $1,000 to win feature event sponsored by Pistol Racing Chassis. Last Saturday night at the Skyline Raceway, it was the final Hunt’s Auto Service Bonus Night for the Sportsman division with a $1,000 top prize on the line for the Sportsman division feature winner. For the third time this season, it was Ryan Jordan picking up the win to collect the increased purse. Jordan has tasted victory on three occasions in 2011, and all three have come in $1,000 to win events. The 25 lap Hunt’s Auto Service sponsored Sportsman feature saw Ryan Jordan make his move early in the event as he charged from his fifth starting position to take over the race lead just four laps in aboard his Spazztic Race Components sponsored entry. While Jordan seized control of the event early, it would not be an easy in for Jordan as he had plenty of fast company nipping at his heels the entire distance. Current point leader Chris Stull came through the pack just behind Jordan, making his way to second and setting his sights on Ryan. It soon became a three car battle at the head of the field as Kevin Jordan made his way to third. The second half of the feature event saw a three car battle at the head of the field with Jordan hanging on to the lead despite heavy pressure from Stull and his uncle Kevin.

The battle for the lead and the win raged all the way to the checkered flag as Stull worked both the inside and outside groove to attempt take the lead. Jordan never wavered from his groove despite the heavy pressure. Ryan flashed under the checkered flag to score the win and collect the $1,000. Stull finished second to all but assure himself of the 2011 championship with only one point race remaining on the schedule. Kevin Jordan finished third with Randy Brokaw and Randy Shantel fourth and fifth respectively.

The IMCA Modified division saw a first time winner as Bump Scutt powered to his first career victory in the 20 lap feature event. Scutt grabbed the lead from his outside pole position at the drop of the green flag and would go on to lead all 20 laps to finally secure that elusive first career victory. Though he led all the way, it was far from an easy win for Scutt as he had to contend with a determined challenger in Jerry Lobdell, who pressured Scutt all the way. Lobdell was able to pull alongside Scutt a couple of times, but was never able to complete the pass , settling for a solid runner-up finish. Mike Smith, Rick McNeal, and Chris Fleming were third through fifth. Fleming’s fifth place finish was enough to earn him the 2011 Skyline Raceway IMCA Modified championship.

Scott Smith earned his second win of the season in the 20 lap Street Stock feature. Smith took over the top spot when race leader Gene Sharpsteen slowed with a flat tire, handing the lead over to Smith just past the halfway point. Over the second half of the event, Smith fought off a determined challenge from Rich Green to score the victory. Green settled for a strong runner-up finish to lace himself solidly atop the point standings with one point race remaining. Jake Fowlson drove to a third place finish with John Cooper Jr. fourth and Kevin Boynton rounding out the top five.

Dan Freelove utilized some last lap heroics to grab his second Junkyard Dogs feature of the season. Freelove made a daring move to the outside as he and race leader Buck Mills Jr. drove off the final turn mired in heavy lapped traffic. Mills chose the low side of the speedway while Freelove was able to just make his car fit between a lapped car and the outside wall. Despite scraping the wall and sending up a shower of sparks, Freelove was able to just nose out Mills at the line. Todd Koegel clinched the 2011 championship with his third place finish with Alvah Watson finishing fourth. Derek Simmons rounded out the top five finishing order. Matt Johnson finished eleventh overall, earning him his consecutive Empire Sport Trucks feature win. Steve Argus earned the 2011 Empire Sport Trucks championship.

KEVIN JORDAN EARNS FIRST SKYLINE VICTORY OF SEASON

Kevin Jordan finally broke through for his first win of the 2011 racing season last Saturday night at the Skyline Raceway. Mike Smith returned to victory lane in the IMCA Modified feature event as he tunes up for a trip to the IMCA Modified Nationals in Boone, Iowa over the Labor Day Weekend. Rich Green broke into the double digit win mark as he drove to his tenth Street Stock victory of the season. Todd Koegel topped the Junkyard Dogs division with Nick Greist winning his third consecutive Junkyard Pups feature. The Empire Sport Trucks ran their first ever stand-alone feature with Matt Johnson earning the victory. Trevor Dudley won his ninth Young Pups feature of the season.

The 25 lap Sportsman feature came to the green flag with Randy Shantel and John Morse sharing the front row. Shantel grabbed the lead over Morse at the drop of the green flag as Jordan made a quick move to advance from his fourth starting position to run second behind Shantel. Jordan immediately began to pressure Shantel for the top spot and the two drivers, both in search of their first win of the season, went at it tooth and nail for several laps before Jordan was able to make what would prove to be the winning pass on the ninth lap.

The 25 lap feature would run off without a caution flag as the Sportsman teams went at it for 25 consecutive laps. Jordan would lead the remainder of the event to finally break through for his first win in what has been a hard luck season for him. Shantel hung on to finish second over a fast closing Randy Brokaw, who finished third. Ryan Jordan was the hard charger of the night, charging from the tail of the field at the start to finish fourth without the aid of a caution flag. Chris Stull rounded out the top five finishers in the feature event.

Mike Smith continued his winning ways in the IMCA Modified feature, making the winning pass just five laps from the end as he drove past his Harris Race Cars teammate Rich McNeil to take control of the event. McNeil tried to chase Smith down over the closing laps, but settled for a solid runner-up finish to complete the sweep of the top two spots by the Harris Race Cars team. Kevan Cook, Chris Fleming, and Jerry Lobdell finished third through fifth. In victory lane, Smith announced that he has been selected to participate in the All Star Race as part of the IMCA Nationals in Boone, Iowa next month.

Rich Green was back behind the wheel of his brother Butch’s #56D for the evening and the combination clicked immediately as Rich drove to victory in the 20 lap Street Stock feature. Some tough luck over the past few weeks found Green handicapped to the outside pole for the start of the feature event. Rich grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and went on to lead all 20 laps of the event to pick up the win. Scott Smith chased Green all the way before settling for a solid runner-up finish with Rich Talada finishing third. Lee Sharpsteen came home fourth in his first start of the season with John Cooper Jr. claiming the fifth finishing position.

Ryan was up to the challenge as he was able to hand onto the lead as behind him eight time feature winner Chris Stull had charged from deep in the field to advance to third as the race approached the halfway point. The three drivers put on a show for the Skyline fans as the locked up in a torrid battle for the top spot.

Stull and Kevin Jordan continued to pressure Ryan as the three raced hard for the lead with Ryan Jordan holding off repeated challenges. Misfortune would strike Kevin Jordan just five laps from the finish as the tight racing got a little too tight as Kevin clipped the infield marker tire exiting the second turn, folding up the front end and costing him a nice finish. The final five laps of the event saw Stull throwing everything he had at Ryan over the closing laps, but Jordan was up to the challenge and managed to keep Stull behind him all the way to the checkered flag. Ryan collected the $1,000 winner’s check while Stull padded his lead in the quest for the Sportsman division championship with a runner-up finish. John Morse enjoyed his best finish of the season with a third place effort with Randy Brokaw and Randy Shantel rounding out the top five finishers.

After 20 laps of hard fought IMCA Modified racing including ten laps of continuous side by side racing, Kevan Cook and Jerry Lobdell flashed across the finish line side by side. The two veteran drivers crossed the line so close that even a check of a finish line photo could not conclusively determine a winner between the two as they were that close. The official result was a declaration of a dead heat by track officials with both Cook and Lobdell being credited with the feature win. Chris Fleming was closing on the leaders over the closing laps to finish third ahead of Mark Griffin and John Wilbur.

The two veterans battled for many laps with Mills hanging onto a narrow advantage all the way to the finish. Lance Albenese finished third with Kevin Giangarry and Joe Busy completing the top five. Steve Argus finished eighth overall to earn the Empire Sport Trucks feature win, his third of the season.

Nick Greist picked up the victory in the 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature event. Greist made the winning pass on lap eight as he drove past Robbie Feine to take over the lead. Bad luck would continue to plague Feine as a flat tire sent him to the pits late in the event. Bobby Wagner made a late run at Griest before settling for a runner-up finish. Phil Burns finished third ahead of Jimmy Neff and newcomer Austin Dickerson.

Timothy Vandermark earned his second Young Pups feature win of the season, making it a clean sweep of Four Cylinder racing on the evening for the Beezer Wilke owned racing team.

Saturday night’s racing was sponsored by the Dream Factory of Central New York, a wish fulfillment agency for seriously ill children. Dream Factory representative Alex Kennedy, an up and coming NASCAR driver, was on hand for the evening taking in the racing action. Also on hand was Cortland, NY ARCA driver Brent Cross, who was on hand to meet the Skyline fans after his 21st place finish last weekend at Pocono.

CHRIS STULL WINS NINTH SPORTSMAN FEATURE AT SKYLINE

Chris Stull’s remarkable 2011 season continued on Saturday night as the Sportsman division’s current point leader notched another win, his seventh win of the season. Chris Fleming capitalized on Mike Smith’s bad luck to score the win in the IMCA Modified division with Brenton Miller winning his first Street Stock feature of the season. Current point leader Todd Koegel was the Junkyard Dogs feature winner with Dan Wood earning the Empire Sport Trucks win. Keith Potter topped the Junkyard Pups feature event and Trevor Dudley earned the Young Pups checkered flag, his seventh of the season.

For the second consecutive week the Sportsman class ran off their 25 lap feature event without a caution flag with 25 consecutive laps of hard, close, often side by side racing action the order of the night. The early stages of the event saw a tight side by side battle for the lead as veterans Ray Taylor and Kevin Jordan put on a show as they went at it for the lead right from the drop of the green flag. That two car battle would eventually become a five car battle for the lead as Randy Brokaw, Randy Shantel, and eventual winner Chris Stull broke free of traffic and joined the fight at the head of the field.

There was no let-up in the intensity of the battle for the lead as the five veteran drivers put on a show for the Skyline fans. As the race neared the halfway point, Stull was beginning to make some noise as he started to pick off cars in the lead pack to make his move to the front. Stull’s charge was relentless as the worked past Brokaw for third on the 14th circuit to set his sights on the battle for the lead. Chris then went to work on Jordan for second, taking that spot away just three laps later. Stull’s winning pass came quickly after that as he drove around Taylor to take the lead for good. Over the closing laps, Stull was able to open up a lead as behind him the race-long battle between Taylor and Jordan continued all the way to the checkered flag. Stull flashed under the checkered flag to take the win with Taylor just holding off Jordan, who finished third. Randy Brokaw just held off Randy Shantel for fourth with Shantel completing the top five finishing order.

The 20 lap IMCA Modified feature saw some last lap drama as Mike Smith appeared to be well on his way to a seventh feature win, enjoying a comfortable lead over Chris Fleming on the final lap of the event. Exiting the fourth turn with the checkered flag waving, Smith suddenly lost power. With Smith coasting toward the finish line, Fleming was able to charge past to take over the lead and the feature win. Kevan Cook also drove around Smith to finish second while Smith coasted across the line to salvage a third place finish. Mike Wilbur and Jason Sullivan were fourth and fifth.

In Street Stock action, Brenton Miller earned his first victory of the season. Miller spent the early portion of the race battling with Jake Fowlston for the top spot as the two raced side by side for several laps before Miller was able to complete the pass and take over the lead for good just prior to the halfway point. Miller would lead the remainder of the event to record the win. Scott Smith made a late charge to finish second with Rich Green finishing third in his new ride, the Boynton Motorsports #3L. Jake Fowlston and Hick Nye rounded out the top five.

Current point leader Todd Koegel was awarded the victory in the Junkyard Dogs class when apparent winner Larry Rowley was disqualified for a weight violation. Buck Mills finished second behind Koegel with Joe Bushy third. Dan Wood finished fourth overall and was awarded the Empire Sport Trucks victory as the highest finishing truck. CHRIS STULL WINS EIGHTH SPORTSMAN FEATURE AT SKYLINE

-Mike Smith returns to IMCA Modified victory lane

As hot as the weather was on Saturday night, the racing action was even hotter at the Skyline Raceway on Saturday night. Chris Stull’s dream season continued as he outdueled Kevin Jordan in a non-stop 25 lap Sportsman feature to run his 2011 win total to six. Mike Smith earned a hard-fought IMCA Modified victory while Scott Smith won his first Street Stock feature of the season. Todd Koegel picked up the win in the Junkyard Dogs feature event with Street stock star Brent Miller picking up the ride in the Wagner #8w truck for the evening and driving it to the Empire Sport Truck win. Nick Greist won the Junkyard Pups feature event with Tim Vandermark winning his first Young Pups feature, making it a sweep of Four Cylinder action for the Beezer Wilke Racing Team.

Kevin Jordan and Ray Taylor made up the front row for the start of the 25 lap Sportsman feature event. The early stages of the race featured a side by side battle for the lead between the two seasoned veterans as they raced hard for the top spot. Behind them, eventual winner Chris Stull was making his way toward the front of the field, making it a three way battle for the lead. Stull, using his preferred outside groove was able to work his way past Taylor to advance into the runner-up position as the race neared the halfway point.

With the race running without a caution flag, the intensity of the race at the head of the field increased as the race neared the halfway point. Stull made what would prove to be the winning pass just one lap prior to the halfway point as he drove around the outside of Jordan to seize control of the number one position. Though Stull would lead the remainder of the event aboard his O’Shea Tire sponsored entry, he still faced a strong challenge from Jordan as Kevin kept the pressure on. Kevin took several looks to the inside of Stull, but could never complete the pass. Stull took the checkered flag to run his win total to six so far in 2011. Jordan settled for second after a very strong effort. Ken Hammond finished third with Randy Brokaw and early leader Ray Taylor completing the top five running order.

The 20 lap IMCA Modified feature saw Bump Scutt grab the lead at the drop of the green flag, trailed by Rich McNeil. Scutt lead the early stages of the event as behind him eventual winner Mike Smith drove his way into contention, slipping past fellow Harris Race Cars teammate McNeil into the runner-up position behind Scutt. As the crossed flags were displayed, Smith made his move, driving past Scutt and into the lead. A lap 13 restart shuffled the running order at the front of the field as Kevan Cook slipped past Scutt into the second position. Cook would set his sights on Smith, but Mike was up to the challenge and drove on the score the win. Cook settled for a runner-up finish with Chris Fleming making a late charge to finish third. Rich McNeil and invader Gary Roberts were fourth and fifth respectively.

In Street Stock action, Scott Smith took advantage of a front row starting position to earn his first win of the 2011 campaign. Smith grabbed the lead from his outside pole starting position and spent the first half of the race holding off a challenge from Rich Talada. Talada’s hard luck season continued as a flat tire just past the halfway point would cost him a top five finish and a shot at the victory. Talada’s misfortune put Brent Miller in the runner-up position. Miller made a late charge at Smith, but Scott was up to the challenge and held Miller off over the closing laps to secure the win. Miller finished second ahead of Gene Sharpsteen, Jake Fowlston, and Daryl Krebs.

Current point leader Todd Koegel drove to victory in the Junkyard Dogs feature event. Koegel took over the top spot just past the halfway point when race leader Larry Rowley made contact with a couple of lapped cars that tangled directly in front of him. Rowley was forced to pit, turning the lead over to Koegel. Rowley charged from the rear of the field to challenge Koegel over the closing laps, but Todd was up to the challenge and drove n to victory. Rowley recovered from his misfortune to finish second with Derek Simonds third. Katie Smith finished fourth with Brent Miller fifth. Miller’s fifth place finish was best among the Empire Sport Trucks entries, earning him the EST victory.

Nick Greist topped the 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature event, his second win of the 2011 season at Skyline. Lee Wagner drove to a career best runner-up finish, holding off a determined charge from teammate Phil Burns for that position. Burns settled for a third place finish with Don Sinn and Chris Carman completing the top five.

Twelve year old Timothy Vandermark, the youngest driver in the Junkyard Pups division, drove to his first career victory in their 10 lap feature event. Vandermark had to work for the win as multiple time winner Trevor Dudley pressured him all the way. Vandermark was up to the challenge, as he never faltered under the pressure to earn his first trip to victory lane. Dudley settled for a second place finish with Eric Rowley third.

Racing action continues this Saturday night with a full night of racing action. All of Skyline’s weekly divisions will be in action including the Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Junkyard Dogs, Empire Sport Trucks, Junkyard Pups, and Young Pups. In addition, there will also be bicycle races for the children. All of the racing action gets underway at 6:30 PM. Log onto www.skylineracewayny.com for all of the latest news and information.

CHRIS STULL SCORES AT SKYLINE

-JJ Courcy snaps Smith’s streak for IMCA Modified win

Even an early race spin could not derail Chris Stull’s charge to his seventh Sportsman feature win of the season at the Skyline Raceway on Saturday night. Despite the early race misfortune, Stull stormed back through the field to earn the win. JJ Courcy outdueled Mike Smith in an exciting IMCA Modified feature to earn his first win of the season, snapping Smith’s five race winning streak. Gene Sharpsteen won his second Street Stock feature event of the season. Dan Freelove was a first time winner in the Junkyard Dogs division with Steve Argus earning the Empire Sport Trucks victory. Bobby Wagner came out on top of the Junkyard Pus division and Eric Rowley took the Young Pus feature event.

The 25 lap Sportsman division feature came to the green flag with polesetter Bobby Heintz grabbing the lead at the drop of the green flag. Just three laps into the event, traffic bottled up which resulted in eventual winner Chris Stull spinning and getting tagged by Ray Taylor. Stull would rejoin at the rear of the field with Heintz continuing to lead but facing a strong challenge from Randy Shantel and Ryan Jordan. Both Shantel and Jordan worked past Heintz with Shantel leading briefly before surrendering the lead to Jordan. As the race neared the halfway point, Stull was becoming a player again as he had recovered nicely to run third.

Stull’s methodical charge continued as he slipped past Shantel to take second, then work past Jordan into the lead a couple of laps later. A caution flag just six laps from the finish for a spinning Wade Morse bunched the field for a final run to the checkered flag. Stull controlled the restart and drove away from the pack to earn the win. Behind him, Ken Hammond made a late charge to take the runner-up position with a late pass of Jordan to earn that position. Jordan hung on to finish third ahead of Shantel and Randy Brokaw.

The 20 lap IMCA Modified feature came down to a battle for the win between JJ Courcy and Mike Smith, who came into Saturday night riding a five week winning streak in IMCA Modified action at Skyline. The two veteran drivers put on a show for the Skyline fans at they battled for the top spot. Courcy got to the front first and was running in the preferred outside groove, forcing Smith to work the bottom as he tried to make the winning pass. The two battled side by side for most of the second half of the event with Smith looking low in every turn, but never able to get enough of a run off the bottom to complete the pass. Courcy hung on all the way to the checkered flag to earn his first Skyline victory of the season by a narrow margin over Smith. Kevan Cook finished third trailed by Chris Fleming and Josh VanTassel.

In Street Stock action, Gene Sharpsteen drove to his second feature event win of 2011. Sharpsteen took the lead from Brent Miller just past the halfway point, then held off a late run by Jake Fowlston to earn the win. Fowlston’s second place finish was his best of the season to date. Scott Smith fiished third ahead of Brent Miller and Daryl Krebs.

Dan Freelove came out on top of a caution plagued Junkyard Dogs feature to record his first victory of the 2011 campaign. Freelove had to work for the win as he was under heavy pressure from Todd Koegel over the closing laps to earn the victory. A series of late caution flags kept the field bunched up, but Freelove was up to the challenge, holding off a determined challenge from Koegel to earn the win. Shawn Rose finished third with Derek Simmons and Katie Smith completing the top five. Steve Argus finished sixth overall, tops among the Empire Sport Trucks contingent to be declared the Empire Sport Tucks feature winner.

Bobby Wagner won his second consecutive Junkyard Pups feature, inheriting the lead when race leader Phil Burns was forced to retire from the event with mechanical issues. Once in the lead, Wagner had to hold off a late charge from Nick Greist over the closing laps. Greist finished a solid second with Nick Seiter earning a season’s best third place finish. Don Sinn finished fourth with a returning Chris Carman fifth.

Eric Rowley earned his second consecutive Young Pups feature win. Despite a deflating right front tire, Rowley was still able to hold off the challenges of Trevor Dudley and Timothy Vandermark to score the win. Dudley raced to a runner-up finish with Vadermark third. Isiah Forward and Timothy Filkins completed the top five.

CHRIS STULL OUTDUELS RYAN JORDAN FOR SKYLINE VICTORY

-Mike Smith’s IMCA Modified win streak at 5

Chris Stull scored a hard earned feature win last Saturday night at the Skyline Raceway. Stull came out on top of a side by side battle with Ryan Jordan as the two raced the final five laps of the feature event side by side with Stull just beating out Jordan at the checkered flag. Mike Smith topped Jerry Lobdell in another exciting IMCA Modified feature to earn his fifth straight feature win. Daryl Krebs won his first Street Stock feature of the season. Buck Mills earned his first Junkyard Dogs feature win of 2011 with Dan Wood finishing fifth overall to be declared the Empire Sport Trucks winner. Bobby Wagner topped the Junkyard Pups division and Eric Rowley was the Young Pups winner.

Bobby Heintz and Ken Hammond brought the Sportsman feature to the green flag to begin their 25 lap feature event. Heintz grabbed the top spot as the green flag waved as behind him Kevin Jordan, Ray Taylor, and Ryan Jordan battled for the runner-up position. Kevin Jordan’s strong run ended on the tenth lap as he slowed to a stop. On the ensuing restart, Ryan Jordan moved to the head of the pack as he worked past Heintz into the lead. Behind Jordan, a new challenger was working his way into the picture as eventual winner Stull was making one of his patented charges on the high side of the speedway. As the race passed the halfway point, the battle for the win was on as Stull utilized the high groove to advance on Jordan with Ryan working the low groove. The two spent the majority of the second half of the race battling side by side for the victory as they put on a tremendous show of side by side racing. This battle raged all the way to the checkered flag as both raced hard but clean with no contact despite the many laps of sustained side by side racing. Stull was able to get a big run off the final turn to just nose out Jordan as the two flashed across the finish line. Stull took the hard fought victory by a narrow margin over Jordan. Randy Shantel finished a strong third ahead of veteran Ray Taylor. Randy Brokaw charged from the scratch starting position to finish fifth.

Mike Smith ran his winning streak to five in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature event. Bump Scutt grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and led the first half of the event before surrendering the lead to Jerry Lobdell as he and eventual winner Smith were both able to work past Scutt. Over the second half of the event, Lobdell and Smith locked up in a tight battle with Smith working the low groove of the speedway, repeatedly looking low on Lobdell. Lapped traffic would prove to be the decisive factor in this event as a lapped car momentarily impeded Lobdell’s progress, opening the door for Smith. Mike took advantage of the break to slip past and into the lead. Smith held off Lobdell over the final three laps , earning the victory as well as the $100 bonus offered for sweeping the weekend’s activity at Black Rock and Skyline. Lobdell drove to a solid runner-up finish with Scutt finishing a strong third. Kevan Cook and Chris Fleming were fourth and fifth respectively.

Daryl Krebs drove to his first victory of the season in the 20 lap Street stock feature. Krebs inherited the lead on the 15th lap when Rich Talada and Rich Green tangled while racing for the lead. This would prove to be the only break Krebs would need as he led the final five circuits to score the win. Green and Talada recovered from their incident to finish second and third respectively. John Cooper Jr. was fourth with Brenton Miller completing the top five finishing order.

Buck Mills Jr. drove to his first victory of the season in the Junkyard Dogs feature event. Mills held off a determined challenge from Todd Koegel over the closing laps of the event to secure the win. Koegel threw everything he had at Mills, but Mills was up to the challenge as he was able to keep Koegel behind him the entire distance. Koegel settled for a runner-up finish with Dan Freelove finishing third. Kevin Giangarra finished fourth with Dan Wood fifth. Wood’s fifth place finish was the best among the Empire Sport Trucks entries, earning him the victory in that class.

Bobby Wagner drove to victory in the 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature event. Wagner passed Ashley Jones for the top spot on lap four, then held off a late charge by Keith Potter to earn the win. Potter finished second ahead of Nick Greist, Don Sinn, and Ashley Jones.

Eric Rowley outraced Timothy Vandermark to earn the victory in the Young Pups feature event. Vandermark finished a strong second trailed by Trevor Dudley, Timothy Filkins, and newcomer Kerrie Jones.

Racing action continues this Saturday night with a full night of racing action. RYAN JORDAN CAPUTRES $1,000 SPORTSMAN VICOTRY AT SKYLINE

Ryan Jordan made his first victory of the season at the Skyline Raceway a big one as he drove to victory in the 25 lap Hunt’s Auto Service Bonus Night Sportsman feature, pocketing a cool grand for his efforts. Mike Smith ran his winning streak to four in IMCA Modified action while Rich Green continued his domination of the Street Stock division with his ninth win of the season. Larry Rowley came out on top of the Junkyard Dogs feature with Dan Wood picking up the Empire Sport Trucks win. Nick Greist won his first Junkyard Pups feature of the season while Trevor Dudley won his fourth consecutive Young Pups feature.

The 25 lap Sportsman feature saw Ryan Jordan and Ray Taylor pace the field to the green flag with Jordan grabbing the lead right at the start of the event. The race quickly developed into a Jordan family duel as Kevin Jordan worked his way quickly from his seventh starting position to work his way around Taylor and set his sights on his nephew, who was utilizing the low groove of the speedway. Kevin was able to close in on Ryan, pressuring the youngster. Ryan was up to the challenge as he was running solidly in the low groove and continued to hit his marks lap after lap despite the pressure from behind. Kevin pressured Ryan all the way, but could never find a way past and settled for a runner-up finish. Ray Taylor crossed the line third ahead of Randy Shantel and Jim Rothwell.

Mike Smith won his fourth consecutive IMCA Modified feature. Bump Scutt led the early stages of the event before surrendering the top spot to Smith on the sixth circuit. Chris Fleming worked past Scutt just before the halfway point and set his sights on Smith. The two veterans of the IMCA Modified division spent the second half of the event locked in a battle for the win. With Smith utilizing the high side of the speedway, Fleming went to the bottom. Several times, Chris was able to pull alongside Smith, but was never able to complete the pass as Mike was able to utilize the momentum in the high groove to retake the lead exiting the turns. The two would duel all the way to the finish with Smith taking the win over Fleming. Bump Scutt’s third place finish was his best of the season with Josh VanTassell and Rich McNeal fourth and fifth.

Rich Green’s dream season continued on Saturday night as he drove to his ninth victory of the season in Street Stock action. Green had to work for the win, however, as he and Rich Talada spent several laps racing side by side for the top spot as the two veteran drivers battled for the win. Unfortunately for Talada, his hard luck 2011 season continued as clutch problems forced him to retire from the event, turning the lead over to Green for good. Late in the event, Gene Sharpsteen made a run at Green, but ran out of time and had to settle for the runner-up position behind Green. Current Race of Champions Street Stock Tour point leader Brent Miller finished third with John Cooper Jr. and Daryl Krebs fourth and fifth respectively.

In Junkyard Dogs action, Larry Rowley earned the feature win with a late race pass of Todd Koegel to take over the top spot. Rowley then led the final three laps to secure the victory. Koegel finished second with early race leader Buck Mills Jr. finishing third. Dan Freelove finished fourth with Kevin Giangarra completing the top five finishing order. Dan Wood finished sixth overall to earn the Empire Sport Truck win as the truck field grew to four this week.

Nick Greist picked up his first win of the season in the Junkyard Pups division. Greist, a recent addition to the Skyline field as the driver of the Beezer Wilke owned #107, outraced Bobby Edwards as the two veterans of the Junkyard Pups division spent the majority of the event battling side by side for the win. Greist ultimately prevailed with Edwards settling for second. Bobby Wagner finished third with Keith Potter and Clem Underwood completing the top five.

Trevor Dudley earned his fourth consecutive win in Young Pups action. Dudley came out on top of a racelong battle with Timothy Vandermark, who finished second. Eric Rowley finished third with Timothy Filkins and Dylan Thompson completing the top five. Dudley was awarded his first half championship trophy in victory lane. SKYLINE RACEWAY BEATS THE WEATHER, CHRIS STULL EARNS SPORTSMAN VICTORY

For a while it appeared that Saturday night’s racing card at the Skyline Raceway was in jeopardy of falling to the weather as heavy rains passed through the area during heat race action. After a significant break to dry the racing surface, racing action resumed after a 90 minute delay. Chris Stull rode the high side around the speedway to capture his fourth win of the season in the Hunt’s Auto Sportsman division. Mike Smith ran his winning streak to three in IMCA Modified action and Rich Green utilized a last lap pass to earn his eighth win of the season. Todd Koegel was the Junkyard Dogs winner with Steve Argus winning his first Empire Sport Trucks feature. Keith Potter won his first Junkyard Pups feature while Trevor Dudley won his third consecutive Young Pups feature.

The rain that fell added plenty of moisture to the racing surface, making for plenty of side by side racing as the drivers utilized all of the racing surface, racing two and three wide all night. Despite the tight racing, only five caution flags waved during all of the feature racing action.

The early stages of the 25 lap Sportsman feature saw plenty of tree wide racing action as Ray Taylor, Jon Carpenter, and Billy Shantel got locked up in a three way battle for the top spot. The three spent most of the first ten laps battling for the lead as behind them eventual winner Stull broke into the top five for the first time on the tenth circuit. As the race crossed the halfway point, it had become a five car battle for the lead as Stull and Jim Rothwell joined the battle. The top five drivers put on a show for the fans who stuck out the rain delay, with plenty of hard racing as they swapped lanes and positions on every lap. Unfortunately for Carpenter, his race would end early as he came to a stop on the backstretch with steam belching from under the hood of his machine.

This would be the only caution flag of the race and it bunched the field up for a run to the finish. On the restart, Stull went to the high side of the speedway to make his way to the front. He made the winning pass on the 18th circuit in dramatic fashion as he swept around the outside of Taylor, Rothwell, and Shantel in the first and second turns to move from fourth to the lead in only a single set of turns. Once out front, Stull led the remaining laps to earn the win, his fourth of the season. Rothwell and Taylor battled all the way to the checkered flag with Rothwell just managing to hold off Taylor for the runner-up position. Taylor finished third with Kevin Jordan recovering from a mid-race incident to finish fourth with Shantel completing the top five finishing order.

The IMCA Modifieds ran off a non-stop 20 lap feature event that showcased the level of competition in the division as for most of the 20 laps there was side by side racing at the head of the field with the final outcome very much in doubt all the way until the checkered flag waved. Mike Smith earned a hard fought feature win as he, JJ Courcy, and Jerry Lobdell spent the entire 20 lap distance locked in a three way battle at the head of the field. The three veterans of the IMCA Modified wars at Skyline certainly showcased the division well as they went at it for 20 laps with plenty of hard racing that saw only minor incidental contact between the three as they raced on the ragged edge for 20 laps. As they crossed the line, it was Smith running his winning streak to three as he managed to hang onto the lead despite heavy pressure from two strong challengers. Courcy earned the runner-up finish with Lobdell crossing the line in third. All three received a nice ovation from the Skyline fans for the show they put on. Chris Fleming and Josh VanTassell completed the top five.

Rich Green utilized some last lap heroics to earn his eighth win of the season in the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Scott Smith led the majority of the event and appeared to be on his way to his first win of the season, however a late race caution flag erased his big lead and put Green right on his rear bumper. Smith held Green off for several laps as Green’s machine was showing some smoke from the rear of the car. Despite the smoke, Green was able to get a run to the inside of Smith exiting the fourth turn on the final circuit. The two raced side by side down the front stretch with Green just nosing out Smith at the flag to secure the win. Smith settled for a season’s best runner-up finish with Rich Talada finishing third. John Cooper Jr. and Daryl Krebs were fourth and fifth respectively.

The Junkyard Dogs feature win was awarded to Todd Koegel after apparent race winner Larry Rowley failed post race technical inspection and was disqualified. This awarded the win to Koegel, his second consecutive feature win. Buck Mills Jr. finished second trailed by Tyrone Scott, Katie Smith, and Carey Barber.

Keith Potter earned his first win of 2011 in the Junkyard Pups division. Potter started fourth and took over the top spot from Lee Wagner on the second lap. Potter would lead the remainder of the distance, holding off a determined challenge from eventual runner-up Don Sinn over the closing laps. Nick Greist finished third ahead of Lee Wagner and Jimmy Neff.

Trevor Dudley earned his third consecutive win in Young Pups action. Dudley bested Eric Rowley for the win and the first half division championship. Rowley finished second trailed by Tim Filkins and Timothy Vandermark.

Racing action continues this Saturday night with a full night of racing action. It will be the third Hunt’s Auto Center Sportsman Bonus night with all Sportsman teams who were in competition on Saturday night racing for $1,000 to win courtesy of Hunt’s Auto Center. RANDY BROKAW EARNS SPORTSMAN DIVISION FEATURE WIN AT SKYLINE
-Mike Smith tops IMCA Modified action

After a week off due to rain, racing returned to the Skyline Raceway last Saturday night. Opeing night feature winner Randy Brokaw returned to victory lane for the second time in 2011. Mike Smith won his second consecutive IMCA Modified feature with Rich Talada earning his first Street Stock victory of the season. Todd Koegel topped the Junkyard Dog class with Dan Wood earning the Empire Sport Truck victory. Bobby Wagner won his fourth consecutive Junkyard Pups victory with Trevor Dudley winning his fourth Young Pups feature.

A couple of weeks of misfortune found eventual winner Randy Brokaw handicapped to the front row for the start of the 25 lap Sportsman division feature event. Brokaw grabbed the lead at the start of the event with Brad Alger holding down the runner-up position. With the first 20 laps of the feature event running off without a caution flag there was plenty of racing action through the pack. Kevin Jordan made his presence known early as he worked past Alger and set his sights on Brokaw. The middle stages of the event featured a battle for the lead as Jordan closed in on Brokaw and began to pressure Randy for the top spot. Several time, Jordan was able to get the front wheels underneath Brokaw in the turns, but each time Randy was able to hold off the challenge.

By the time the race’s only caution flag waved for a disabled car coming to a stop on the backstretch, Chris Stull had joined the battle at the head of the field. The final five laps of the event featured a three way battle for the win. Brokaw was up to the challenge as he managed to keep both Jordan and Stull behind him as he drove under the checkered flag to core the win, his first since the opening night of the season. Jordan held of Stull to finish second with Stull third. Brad Alger hung on to finish fourth with Ken Hammond completing the top five finishing order.

The early stages of the IMCA Modified feature saw a tight battle for the top spot as Bump Scutt grabbed the early lead from his outside pole starting position. A couple of early caution flags kept the field bunched up tightly and Scutt soon found himself facing a challenge from eventual winner Mike Smith. The two spent several laps racing side by side before Smith was able to utilize the low groove of the speedway to complete the pass on the seventh lap. Though he had the lead, Smith was far from home free as some new challengers were soon right with Smith as by the halfway point the race for the win came down to a three way battle between Smith, Chris Fleming, and JJ Courcy. The three veterans of the IMCA Modified division spent the second half of the race battling for the top spot. Smith ultimately came out on top after many laps of hard racing to score the win over Fleming and Courcy. Pete Neff finished fourth with Rich McNeal overcoming an early race incident to finish fifth.

In Street Stock action, Rich Talada drove to his first feature win of the 2011 season. John Cooper Jr. grabbed the early lead and held the top spot for the first four laps before surrendering the top spot to Talada. The second half of the event saw an exciting two car battle for the top spot as Talada was under heavy pressure from Gene Sharpsteen. Seven time winner Rich Green made it a three car battle, but his challenge ended with a mechanical failure on the 15th circuit. This left Sharpsteen to challenge Talada. Gene pressured Rich all the way, but Talada was up to the challenge as he kept Sharpsteen at bay all the way to score the win over Sharpsteen. Brent Miller finished third with Scott Smith fourth. Kevin Boynton rounded out the top five finishing order.

The Junkyard Dogs feature came down to a two car battle between Todd Koegel and Larry Rowley. The two drivers who have dominated the division thus far in 2011 battled hard for the win with Koegel managing to hold off Rowley to earn the victory. Rowley settled for a runner-up finish with Dan Freelove finishing third. Katie Smith and Buck Mills Jr. were fourth and fifth respectively. Dan Woods finished sixth over all, the highest finishing Empire Sport Trucks entry, earning him the EST victory.

Bobby Wagner capitalized on a late restart to grab the lead and drive on to his fourth consecutive Junkyard Pups feature win. Don Sinn drove to a season’s best runner-up finish trailed by Jimmy Neff, Keith Potter, and Phil Burns.

Trevor Dudley passed Tim Filkins for the lead just prior to the halfway point of the Young Pups feature, then held off a hard charging Timothy Vandermark over the closing laps to win his fourth Young Pups feature event. Vandermark finished second trailed by Filkins, Dylan Thompson, and Eric Rowley.

Racing action continues this Saturday night with a full night of racing action. CHRIS STULL EARNS $1,000 SPORTSMAN VICTORY AT SKYLINE

When the big money is on the line at Skyline, it is a safe bet that Chris Stull will be somewhere around the front of the field. For the second time in 2011, Stull collected a $1000 paycheck by winning the Hunt’s Auto Service Sportsman Bonus race. Mike Smith returned to victory lane for the fourth time in 2011 in IMCA Modified action. Rich Green continued his domination of the Street Stock division, earning his seventh win of the season. Larry Rowley topped the Junkyard Dogs feature for the fourth time. Seventh place finisher Dan Wood was the highest finishing truck in the event and earned him the Empire Sport Truck win. Bobby Wagner won his fourth straight Junkyard Pups feature with Trevor Dudley topping the Young Pups feature for the third time.

The Sportsman division ran off their feature event without the need for a caution flag as the Sportsman drivers put on a show for the Skyline fans. Randy Brokaw and Jon Carpenter paced the field to the green flag with Brokaw grabbing the lead at the drop of the green flag. The veteran would lead the first tree laps before mechanical problems cropped up and Brokaw pulled to the infield and retired from the event. This turned the lead over to Carpenter, who set the pace but was facing a strong challenge from Kenny Hammond. Hammond was able to slip past Carpenter on the tenth lap to take over the lead. Stull had also driven his way into contention to run second behind Hammond.

As the race crossed the halfway point, Stull was putting heavy pressure on the back bumper of Hammond. The two veteran drivers put on an exciting display of side by side racing as they raced side by side for several laps. Stull was finally able to take the top spot on the 17th circuit as he was scored the race leader as the two raced side by side down the front stretch. Though Stull led the final eight laps, he was never able to shake Hammond, who pressured him all the way to the checkered flag. Stull earned the hard fought victory with Hammond finishing just behind. Kevin Jordan drove to a third place finish with Jim Rothwell and Ryan Jordan completing the top five.

In IMCA Modified action, Mike Smith drove his Harris Race Cars/Smith Collision sponsored #96 to the feature win. Smith started the event in third and had the lead before the first lap went in the books. Though he led all 20 laps, it was far from an easy win for Smith. Some motor problems over the early part of the season found Smith coming to Skyline with a backup motor under the hood. Being somewhat underpowered, the veteran driver chose to run the high side of the speedway, using the momentum of the outside groove to overcome the lack of horsepower under the hood. Over the second half of the race, the battle at the front was a three way battle for the win as Smith had to hold off challenges from both JJ Courcy and Jerry Lobdell. The three spent most of the closing stages of the event side by side, with Smith just managing to keep his challengers at bay. Smith took the win by a narrow margin as Courcy just nosed out Lobdell for second. Jerry finished third with Pete Neff and Kevan Cook fourth and fifth respectively.

Rich Green continued to dominate the Street Stock action as he raced to his seventh win of the season. Rich grabbed the lead on the seventh lap and led the remainder of the distance to pick up the win. Daryl Krebs finished a strong second ahead of Jake Fowlston. John Cooper Jr. and Scott Smith.

Larry Rowley topped the Junkyard Dogs class for the fourth time in 2011. Rowley and Todd Koegel battled for the win with Rowley taking the win over Koegel. Blake Burnette finished third in his first 2011 start. Alvah Watson and Tyrone Scott rounded out the top five finishers. Dan Wood finished seventh and was the highest finishing Empire Sport Truck to earn the EST victory.

Bobby Wagner’s hot streak continued in the Junkyard Pups feature as he won his fourth straight feature. Newcomer Grayson Albanese finished second with Don Sinn, Jimmy Neff, and Phil Burns completing the top five.

Trevor Dudley came out on top of a battle with Eric Rowley to earn his third Young Pups feature win of the season. Rowley finished second with Timothy Vandermark third. Timothy Filkins and Isiah Forward were fourth and fifth.

Next Saturday night will feature the second Bonus Night of the season for the IMCA Modified division. All of the IMCA Modifieds teams that were in competition on Saturday night will be racing for a $500 payoff. All of Skyline’s regular divisions will be in action as the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Junkyard Dogs, Empire Sport Trucks, Junkyard Pups and Young Pups will all be in action as well. All of the racing action gets underway at 6:30 PM. Log onto www.skylineracewayny.com for all of the latest news and information.

KEVAN COOK SCORES EMPIRE STATE SERIES VICTORY AT SKYLINE

-Rich Sharpsteen collects $1,000 Street Stock victory

The Skyline Raceway wrapped up their big two day Memorial Day weekend on Sunday afternoon as the IMCA World Products Empire State Series made its annual visit to Skyline. Track regular Kevan Cook defended his home turf as he raced to victory in the 25 lap feature event. Rich Sharpsteen scored a $1,000 payday as he drove to victory in the companion 50 lap Pure Stock special. Larry Rowley won his third feature of the season in the Junkyard Dogs feature and Bobby Wagner won his fourth consecutive Junkyard Pups feature.

The IMCA Modifieds turned out in force with 33 entries for the Empire State Series event. After qualifying races determined the 24 car starting field, The IMCA Modifieds came to the green flag with Jerry Lobdell and Chris Sawyer pacing the field to the green flag. Lobdell jumped out to the early lead with Mike Smith driving past Sawyer to run second. Several early race caution flags kept the field bunched up. Smith drove to the lead on the second lap as he got a big run past Lobdell on a restart to take over the top spot. The battle was now on for the lead as the two Skyline regulars fought for the top spot. It soon became a four car battle at the front of the field as Kevan Cook and Keystone State star Eddie Sites also joined in the battle.

As the race neared the halfway point, Smith suddenly slowed on the backstretch and pulled pitside, handing the lead over to Lobdell. Unfortunately for Jerry, his time as the race leader would last only four laps as he also developed mechanical issues that sent him pitside on the 17th circuit. Lobdell’s misfortune turned the top spot over to eventual winner Cook. The final third of the race saw Cook holding off a determined challenge by Sites as Eddie repeatedly looked to the low side of Cook, but Kevan was up to the challenge as he held off Sites all the way to the finish. For Kevan, it was his first feature win of 2011. Sites chased Cook all the way before settling for a runner-up finish. Mark Griffin charged from his 19th starting position to finish third with Brandon Carvey and Chris Fleming rounding out the top five finishing order.

A full field of Street Stocks were also on hand to take part in a 50 lap feature with a $1,000 payday awaiting the winner. With the feature line-up set by a redraw among the top heat race finishers, invader Bob Buono drew the pole, flanked by Buck Mills, who took over the ride in the Bill Rampe #1J for the evening. Buono grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag with Kurt Decker moving into the runner-up position. The early stages of the event saw Buono setting the pace as fellow invader Chris Fisher advancing past Decker into the runner-up position. By the tenth circuit, Rich Green began to make his presence known as he had advanced to third from his tenth starting position.

Green was the man on the move as he was able to drive past Fisher into the runner-up position and just two laps later Breen made a move to the outside of Buono to take over the top spot. Green has been unbeatable at Skyline thus far in 2011, as he has earned six wins in as many starts coming into Sunday night. Once out front, Green began to open up a bit of an advantage as eventual winner Gene Sharpsteen began to drive his way into contention, advancing to third by the time the race reached its halfway point with Green still leading over Buono, Sharpsteen, Mike Morris, and Brent Miller. Sharpsteen began to press the issue a bit as he worked past Buono to move into the second position behind Green. The entire complexion of the race changed in dramatic fashion on the 33rd lap as race leader Green saw his bid for a seventh consecutive feature come to an end as he spun between the first and second turn. The resulting tangle shuffled the top five considerably as both Morris and Miller became involved in the incident as well.

Green’s misfortune turned the lead over to Sharpsteen, who would lead the final 17 laps to earn the victory, his first Skyline Raceway triumph of 2011, as well as the $1,000 top prize. Over the closing laps, the man on the move was John Cooper Jr. Cooper’s late charge carried him all the way to a runner-up finish. Cooper was closing quickly on Sharpsteen as the race wound down, but he ran out of laps before he could mount a challenge for the top spot. Buck Mills finished third ahead of Daryl Krebs and early race leader Bob Buono.

The Junkyard Pups event for the day was the Gorge Scutt Memorial race, run in memory of George Scutt, who passed away suddenly this spring. The 20 lap event featured plenty of great racing at the head of the field. Invader Kenny Underwood drew the pole and grabbed the early lead, but he immediately found himself facing pressure from current point leader Phil Burns. As the battle raged at the head of the field, eventual winner Bobby Wagner was picking his way through the field to move into contention from his eleventh starting position. The second half of the race saw no less than five cars racing under a blanket as Underwood, Burns, Nick Greist, Bobby Edwards, and Wagner were all locked in a furious battle for the top positions. Wagner made his move in the closing laps, going to the top of the speedway to make his way to the front. Wagner did not get to the lead until the 18th circuit as he drove around both Underwood and Burns in one big move. Wagner led the final two laps to get the win. Burns passed Underwood on the final lap to finish second with Underwood third. Bobby Edwards and Nick Greist completed the top five.

Larry Rowley won his third Junkyard Dogs feature win of the season. Invader George Brown led the majority of the race before a late race caution flag closed up the field. That restart would be the only break Rowley would need as he drove past Brown n the restart to take over the lead for good. Brown’s great race would come to an end early as he spun while driving hard to try to retake the top spot. Rowley led the remainder of the race to earn the victory over Buck MillsJr., Katie Smith, Grayson Albanese, and Kevin Giangarra.

Next Saturday night’s racing card will feature the second Hunt’s Automotive Bonus Night of the season. All of the Sportsman teams that were in competition on Saturday night will be racing for a $1,000 payoff. All of Skyline’s regular divisions will be in action as the IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Junkyard Dogs, Empire Sport Trucks, Junkyard Pups and Young Pups will all be in action as well. SAME CAR, DIFFERENT DRIVER, SAME RESULT AS JIM ROTHWELL WINS AT SKYLINE

-Rich Green earns record tying sixth straight Street Stock win

One week ago, longtime Skyline Raceway veteran Jim “Rocky” Rothwell stepped out of the driver’s seat for the night, turning his ride over to Mitch Gibbs. Mitch promptly went out and won the feature event aboard the Rothwell mount. On Saturday night, Rothwell returned to the seat of his familiar #4. Just as Gibbs had done the previous week, Rothwell drove the car to victory in the 25 lap Sportsman feature. Rich Green joined Stu Space and Ken Updyke as the only three drivers to ever open a racing season at Skyline with a six race wining streak, tying the record with his sixth straight Street Stock win. Mike Smith topped the IMCA Modified field for his second win of the season. Todd Koegel picked up win #4 in the Junkyard Dog feature with Dan Wood being declared the Empire Sport Truck winner as the highest finishing truck in the Dogs feature. Wood finished sixth overall. Bobby Wagner won his third straight Junkyard Pups feature with Eric Rowley winning his third Young Pups feature of 2011.

Ken Hammond and Jon Carpenter paced the Sportsman field to the green flag with Hammond grabbing the top spot from Carpenter. Eventual winner Rothwell started sixth, but immediately made a big move to advance to third on the first lap. Several early caution flags for minor incidents kept the field tightly bunched over the early laps of the event. Rothwell was able to take advantage of the restarts to make his way to second and ultimately to the top spot as he blasted past Hammond for the lead on the fifth circuit. Behind Rothwell, three time feature winner already in 2011 Chris Stull was on the move as he drove past Hammond for second and set his sights on Rothwell.

The second half of the feature event saw an entertaining battle at the head of the field as Kevin Jordan made his way into the battle for the lead, making for an exciting three car battle at the head of the field. Jordan was able to work past Stull and set his sights on Rothwell for the top spot. The two veteran drivers battled hard over the closing laps as Jordan pressured Rothwell hard, but the 20 plus year veteran Rothwell was up to the challenge as he held off Jordan’s repeated challenges. A last lap caution flag for a Marshall Balzer spin set up a one lap dash to the finish. Rothwell executed a perfect restart and was able to gain enough of an advantage to hold the lead to the checkered flag for his first win of 2011. Jordan came home with a seasons best runner-up finish with Chris Stull third. Former Skyline Raceway champion Jim LaRock finished fourth with Kenny Hammond fifth.

Rich Green continued his early season win streak in the Street Stock division as he drove to his sixth consecutive feature win. Polesetter Jake Fowlston grabbled the lead at the start of the event and held the top spot for the early part of the race as Green made his way to the front of the field. Green was able to take control of the event as he worked past Fowlston on a lap five restart to take over the top spot. Though Green would lead the final 15 laps to earn the win, Fowlston did not make it easy as he kept the pressure on the entire distance. Green flashed under the checkered flag to score the victory with Fowlston’s runner-up finish his best result to date in 2011. Rich Talada finished third with Gene Sharpsteen and Brent Miller completing the top five finishing order.

Mike Smith returned to victory lane for the second time in 2011 as he drove to victory in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature. Bruce Sawyer led the initial two circuits before Smith worked past to take over the top spot. Mechanical problems would send Sawyer pitside near the halfway point, leaving Smith, Kevan Cook, and Chris Fleming locked in a three way battle for the top spot. Smith was able to remain at the point and take the victory. Behind him, the battle raged all the way to the finish as Fleming slipped past Cook on the final lap to finish secons with Cook third. JJ Courcy scored a fourth pace finish with second generation star Matt Roberts coming home fifth.

Todd Koegel came out on top of a ferocious battle at the head of the field in the 15 lap Junkyard Dogs feature. He and Larry Rowley got involved in a tremendous battle for the top spot that featured plenty of close side by side racing and several incidents of contact between the two veteran drivers. Koegel was able to hold off Rowley to score the win, his fourth of the season. Buck Mills Jr. finished third in his first start of the season. Steve Rose finished fourth with newcomer Chuck Culbertson fifth. Sixth finishing Dan Wood was the Empire Sport Trucks winner, his fourth of the season.

Bobby Warner took top honors in the Junkyard Pups feature to earn his third consecutive feature win. Wagner outdueled Bobby Edwards to pick up the win with Edwards finishing second. Ashley Jones recovered from a hard crash the previous week to finish third with Keith Potter finishing fourth in his first 2011 appearance. Current point leader Phil Burns finished fifth.

Eric Rowley topped the Young Pups division, earning his third feature win. Twelve year old Timothy Vandermark, the division’s youngest driver, earned a solid runner-up finish with Trevor Dudley finishing third. Tim Filkins fiished fourth ahead of Isiah Forward.

Next Saturday night’s racing card will feature the second Hunt’s Automotive Bonus Night of the season. All of the Sportsman teams that were in competition on Saturday night will be racing for a $1,000 payoff. All of Skyline’s regular divisons will be in action as the IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Junkyard Dogs, Empire Sport Trucks, Junkyard Pups and Young Pups will all be in action as well. MITCH GIBBS SCORED FIRST CAREER SKYLINE RACEWAY FEATURE WIN
-Tommy Paige tops IMCA Modified action

Mitch Gibbs added his first  feature win at the Skyline Raceway to his racing resume last Saturday night as he drove to victory in the 25 lap Sportsman feature.  Gibbs picked up the ride in Jim “Rocky” Rothwell’s #4 entry for the evening and drove it to an impressive victory.  Tommy Paige drove the Pete Neff owned #36 to victory in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature, besting a star studded 28 car field to earn the victory.  Rich Green remained unstoppable in the Pure Stock ranks, earning his fifth victory in as many starts.  Larry Rowley won his second Junkyard Dogs feature of the season with Dan Wood finishing third overall to be named the Empire Sport Trucks feature winner.   Bobby Wagner won his second consecutive Junkyard Pups feature event while Trevor Dudley topped the Young Pups division for the second time in 2010.

Randy Shantel and Jon Carpenter paced the Sportsman field to the green flag with Shantel grabbing the top spot as the green flag waved.  Shantel set the pace in the early stages of the event as eventual winner Gibbs wasted little time in making his way to the front of the field from his fifth starting position.  Gibbs worked past Brad Alger to move into the runner-up position on the fifth circuit and set his sights on Shantel.  It took Gibbs only two more laps to take over the top spot as Mitch drove past Shantel and into the lead.

With Gibbs now setting the pace, he would son face a strong challenge from three time feature winner Chris Stull, who had also worked past Shantel and set off in pursuit of Gibbs.  The second half of the event featured a close race at the head of the field as Gibbs and Stull battled for the victory.  Stull was able to pull alongside Gibbs several times, but each time Gibbs was able to hold off Stull’s charge.  The two veteran drivers would battle all the way to the checkered flag with Gibbs holding Stull off all the way to earn the hard fought victory.  Stull’s three race winning streak came to an end with a solid runner-up finish.  Alger finished a strong third with Kevin Jordan besting veteran Ray Taylor for fourth with Taylor earning his first top five finish of the season.

The 20 lap IMCA Modified feature saw Tommy Paige pick up his first feature win in five years at Skyline.  Paige has not been a regular competitor during that time, but returned to action to start the 2011 season subbing for Pete Neff, who has not been driving due to medical issues.  On Saturday night, Paige drove Neff’s brand new Pistol Chassis to victory lane in a thrilling IMCA Modified feature.  JJ Courcy made a big move from his fourth starting position to grab the lead on the first lap of the event with Paige also wasting little time in driving his way into contention as he advanced to second behind Courcy.   From there, the two veterans put on a thrilling exhibition of hard charging racing action for the Skyline fans as the two spent most of the event running side by side with Paige looking underneath Courcy in every turn.  As the race wound down, Jerry Lobdell joined the battle at the head of the field, making for a three car race for the win.  Lapped traffic would prove to be the decisive factor, as on the final lap, Courcy found his groove blocked momentarily by a lapped car, breaking his momentum for just an instant.  This was the only break that Paige needed as he was able to sweep past Courcy off the final turn to earn the win.  Courcy was able to hang on to finish second with Lobdell crossing the line in third.  Kevan Cook and Gary Roberts completed the top five finishing order.

Rich Green continued to dominate the Pure Stock division, winning his fifth feature in as many starts in 2011.  The win was worth $500 to Green as it was a bonus night in the Pure Stock ranks.  Green started eighth, but made his way quickly to the front, taking the top spot from John Cooper Jr. on the third lap.  Green would lead the rest of the event to secure the victory.  Scott Smith earned a season’s best second place finish with Brent Miller third.  Gene Sharpsteen overcame an early race flat tire to rebound for a fourth place finish with Cooper Jr. finishing fifth.

Larry Rowley came out on top of a race long battle with Todd Koegel to win his second Junkyard Dogs feature event of the season.  Koegel challenged Rowley all the way but settled for a runner-up finish.  Dan Wood finished third to earn the Empire Sport Trucks feature win as he was the highest finishing truck.  Katie Smith finished fourth with Brandon Clapperton rounding out the top five, also in a truck series entry.

Bobby Wagner scored his second consecutive feature win in the Junkyard Pups feature event.  Wagner passed race leader Phil Burns on the second lap and led the remainder of the event to earn the feature win.  Burns hung on to finish second.  Kenny Underwood and Nick Greist were late arrivals at the speedway and started from the rear of the field after missing their heat races.  They made their way through the field to finish third and fourth respectively.  Zack Tracy finished fifth in his first start of 2011.

Trevor Dudley won his second Young Pups feature event of the season.  Dudley grabbed the lead early and dominated the event, winning by a comfortable advantage over Timmy Filkins, who was making his first start of the season.  Eric Rowley finished third trailed by Isaiah Forward and Timothy Vandermark.

This weekend features two big nights of racing action at Skyline Raceway.  On Saturday night, all of Skyline’s regular divisions will be in action in a regular show of racing action on the tacky skyline oval.  The Memorial Day Weekend kicks into high gear on Sunday afternoon as the IMCA Modifieds take center stage as all of the best IMCA Modified teams in New York State converge on Skyline Raceway for Round 2 of the Empire State Series.  The Pure/Street Stocks will be in action as well  with a 50 lap feature paying $1,000 to win.  The Empire Sport Trucks, Junkyard Dogs, and Junkyard Pups round out the Sunday afternoon card.  Racing gets underway at 6 PM on Sunday.   Log onto www.skylineracewayny.com for all of the latest news and information.

CHRIS STULL WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE SKYLINE FEATURE - Mike Smith tops IMCA Modified main

Chris Stull not only had to defeat the other competitors in Skyline Raceway’s talent laden Sportsman field, but also Mother Nature as well to win his second straight feature event. With a mist in the air, Skyline Raceway officials pushed the show along and managed to complete the entire racing card before the rains intensified. Mike Smith earned his second IMCA Modified feature win while Rich Green continued to dominate the Pure Stock division with his fourth win in as many starts. Todd Koegel returned to victory lane for the third time in the Junkyard Dogs ranks, with Dan Wood finishing fifth overall to be declared the Empire Sport Trucks winner. Bobby Wagner won his second Junkyard Pups win with Eric Rowley topping the Young Pups main.

Randy Shantel and Jim Rothwell paced the Sportsman Modified field to the green flag to start the 25 lap feature event. Third starter Brad Alger made a quick move at the drop of the green flag to jump into the early lead. Eventual winner Chris Stull also made a big move at the start to advance from his sixth starting position. The race got off to a somewhat rocky start as a first lap tangle on the backstretch saw Randy Brokaw very nearly go over when he, Jim Rothwell, Ken Hammond, and Ray Taylor all tangled. Racing resumed with Alger leading with Stull applying heavy pressure for the top spot. Stull was able to slip past Alger for the lead on the fourth circuit.

With Stull now leading the event, a new challenger was driving his way into contention. Mitch Gibbs, wheeling the O’Hara Racing #BA1 for the second week, slipped past Alger just prior to the halfway point and set off in pursuit of Stull. As the race entered its closing stages, Gibbs had closed the gap on Stull and was looking underneath Stull in every corner. Gibbs’ late race charge was hampered by an overheating condition that saw the car trailing smoke as Mitch tried to challenge for the win. Despite heavy pressure from Gibbs, Stull never wavered from his groove and drove on to score the victory by a narrow margin over Gibbs. Alger finished a strong third with Kevin Jordan and Randy Shantel completing the top five.

Rich McNeal jumped out to the early lead from his second starting position as the IMCA Modified feature came to the green flag. Eventual winner Mike Smith started third and dogged McNeal for the first three laps before making what would be the winning pass on the fourth circuit. Smith led the remainder of the event to pick up his second win of 2011. McNeal drove a strong race to finish second, his best finish of the season as he and teammate Smith completed a sweep of the top two positions for the Harris Race Cars team. Chris Fleming came out on top of a duel for third as he got the spot over Kevan Cook. Bump Scutt overcame an early race spin to finish fifth.

Rich Green kept his perfect record intact as he won his fourth straight Pure Stock feature. He did so in dramatic fashion, making the winning pass exiting the fourth turn on the final lap to edge Brenton Miller by about a foot at the checkered flag. Miller took advantage of a front row starting position to grab the lead at the start. By halfway, Green had moved to second and was putting heavy pressure on Miller for the top spot. The two put on a show for the Skyline fans as Green repeatedly was able to pull alongside Miller, but each time Miller was able to keep Green at bay. Exiting the final turn, Green finally got the bite he was looking for on the low side and was able to just beat Miller to the line in a drag race down the front stretch to the flag. Miller finished second and was the first to victory lane to congratulate Green. Gene Sharpsteen finished third with Scott Smith and Darryl Krebs completing the top five.

In Junkyard Dog action, Todd Koegel came out on top of a racelong duel with Larry Rowley to earn his third win of the season. Rowley pressured Koegel all the way, but could not find a way past and settled for a strong runner-up finish. Dan Freelove finished third with Shawn Rose fourth. Dan Wood finished fifth to earn the Empire Sport Truck victory.

Bobby Wagner dominated the Junkyard Pups feature, leading all 15 laps to pick up his second win of the season. Bobby Edwards finished second trailed by Jimmy Neff, Chris Carman, and Phil Burns.

Eric Rowley scored his second Young Pups feature win of the season. Eric passed early leader Trevor Dudley on the sixth lap then led the final four circuits to pick up the win over Dudley. Dylan Thompson and Tim Vandermark finished third and fourth.

This Saturday night will find the Pure Stocks taking center stage with their first $500 to win feature events of the season. All of Skyline’s regular divisions will be in action with racing getting underway at 6:30 PM. Log onto www.skylineracewayny.com for all of the latest news and information.

CHRIS STULL COLLECTS $1,000 HUNT'S AUTO SERVICE SPORTSMAN VICTORY AT SKYLINE

The first Hunt’s Auto Service Sportsman Challenge race of the season found Chris Stull driving to his second victory of the season and collecting the $1,000 top prize. Chris Fleming won his first IMCA Modified feature of the season while Rich Green continued his winning streak in the Pure Stock ranks, winning his third feature in as many starts. Larry Rowley earned his first win of the season in Junkyard Dog action with Adam Haddow a first time winner in Empire Sport Truck action. Newcomer Andy Brigham topped the Junkyard Pups feature with Dylan Thompson wining his first Young Pups feature of the season.

With $1,000 on the line for the feature winner, Randy Shantel and Jon Carpenter paced the field to the green flag with Shantel grabbing the early lead. Eventual winner Stull started sixth, but made a big move on the initial start to advance to second and immediately went to work on Shantel for the top spot. It took Stull only one additional lap to move around Shantel to take over the lead which he would never relinquish. Shantel’s race would end on the sixth lap as mechanical problems sent him pitside. With Stull comfortably out front, Ken Hammond and Randy Brokaw locked in a tight battle for the runner-up position. Just past the halfway point, Brokaw was able to slip past Hammond for the runner-up position. Over the closing laps, Brokaw was not able to close on Stull, who maintained his lead all the way to the finish to earn the victory. Brokaw finished second with Jon Carpenter advancing to third over the final laps. Brad Alger and Ken Hammond completed the top five finishing order.

JJ Courcy took advantage of a front row starting position to grab the lead at the start of the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature. The early stages of the event featured a battle for the top spot between Courcy and Jerry Lobdell as the two veterans battled often side by side for the top spot. Eventual winner Chris Fleming was on the move early, advancing into the top five from his 13th starting position in only six laps. By the time the race had reached its halfway point, it was a three car battle for the top spot as Fleming joined in the action at the head of the field. The three veterans of IMCA Modified action at Skyline battled hard for the top spot with Fleming first slipping past Lobdell for second before finally wresting the lead away from Courcy on lap 16 following a side by side battle that lasted several laps. Fleming was able to hold off a determined charge by Courcy over the final alps to score the win over Courcy. Mike Wilmont made a late race charge to finish third in his first ever Skyline Raceway start. Jerry Lobdell and Matt Roberts finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Rich Green kept his perfect record intact in Pure Stock action as he drove to his third win in as many starts in 2011. Green took the top spot for good just past the halfway point after he and Scott Smith spent several laps battling side by side for the top spot. Once out front, Green was able to build an advantage over Smith and drive on to earn the win. Smith chased him all the way to finish second. Darryl Krebs finished third with Gene Sharpsteen overcoming an early race spin to race back to finish fourth. Bill Rampe completed the top five finishing order.

Larry Rowley earned his first trip to victory lane of the season in Junkyard Dog action with a late race pass of Dan Freelove. Freelove led the majority of the race before surrendering the top spot to Rowley with just two laps remaining. Freelove held on to finish second while Tyrone Scott’s third place run was his best result of the season to date. Adam Haddow finished fourth to earn the Empire Sport Truck win in only his second ever start. Newcomer Casey Barber rounded out the top five finishers.

With his regular Saturday night track rained out, Andy Brigham made the rip north to Skyline from his Pennsylvania home. The long tow was worth the effort, however, as Brigham drove to victory in the 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature. Brigham’s win came in exciting style as he and Bobby Edwards fought side by side for the top spot for the majority of the event. Brigham was finally able to complete the winning pass with just two laps remaining in the event to take the lead for good and earn his first Skyline Raceway checkered flag. Edwards finished second with Phil Burns third. Bobby Wagner finished fourth ahead of newcomer Chris Conrad.

Dylan Thompson earned his first Young Pups feature win of the season. Thompson inherited the lead on the fourth lap when race leader Trevor Dudley retired from the event with mechanical issues. Thompson then held off Timothy Vandermark to pick up the win. Vandermark finished second with Cody Rowley third. Dudley was scored fourth in the final rundown.

This Saturday night will find the IMCA Modifieds taking center stage with their first $500 to win feature events of the season. CHRIS STULL AND JERRY LOBDELL WIN OPEN WHEEL FEATURES AT SKYLINE

-Rich Green and Todd Koegel repeat in full fendered action

Chris Stull turned in a dominating run to pick up the feature win in the Sportsman feature at the Skyline Raceway last Saturday night, leading all 25 laps to earn his first victory of the season. Jerry Lobdell topped an exciting IMCA Modified feature as he outdueled Kevan Cook to score the win. Rich Green repeated his opening night performance to earn the Pure Stock victory, as did Todd Koegel in the Junkyard Dog division. Bobby Wagner made his first start of the season a winning one in the Junkyard Pups with Cody Rowley topping the Young Pups. Dan Wood was the Empire Sport Truck feature winner.
With feature line-ups set via the luck of the draw, Chris Stull drew the pole for the 25 lap Sportsman feature. At the drop of the green flag, Stull immediately drove to the lead with outside polesetter Brad Alger dropping in behind. The 25 lap feature event ran without a caution flag, which allowed Stull to drive away form a torrid battle for the runner-up position. With Stull holding a comfortable advantage at the head of the field, behind him the battle was on as Alger, Jim Rothwell, and opening night winner Randy Brokaw locked up in a tight battle for the runner-up position. Stull was never challenged as he sprinted on to victory. The battle for second raged all the way to the checkered flag with Alger able to hold off the challengers to finish second. Rothwell crossed the line third with Brokaw fourth. Jon Carpenter completed the top five finishing order.

The IMCA Modified division featured the tightest race of the night. Eventual winner Jerry Lobdell grabbed the lead at the start of the feature event as behind him JJ Courcy made a big move from his fifth starting position to move up to second. The early stages of the event saw Lobdell choosing to run the outside groove with Courcy and Kevan Cook just behind. As the race neared the halfway point, Courcy began to fall off the pace a bit with Cook slipping past for second. Courcy would stop on the track with a flat left rear tire to bring out the caution flag on the twelfth circuit. This bunched the field and set up what would prove to be an entertaining final eight lap run to the checkered flag. Lobdell continued to work the high side with Cook looking to the inside in every turn. Time after time, Cook was able to drive in hard on the bottom entering the turn to pull alongside Lobdell, but each time Lobdell was able to get off the top with enough momentum to hold onto the lead. The two veteran drivers battled this way all the way to the finish with Lobdell just managing to hold off a final challenge coming off the fourth turn to the checkered. Cook finished second. Behind them, Chris Fleming and Matt Roberts were also locked in a tight battle for third with Fleming taking that spot from Roberts on the final lap. Roberts finished fourth with Mark Griffin fifth in his first start of the season.

For the second consecutive week, Rich Green drove to victory in the 20 lap Pure Stock feature. Veteran Gene Sharpsteen grabbed the early lead at the drop of the green flag. Sharpsteen led the first quarter of the event before Green was able to case him down and slip past for the lead on the sixth circuit. RANDY BROKAW OPENS SKYLINE RACEWAY SEASON WITH A VICTORY -Mike Smith tops IMCA Modified action

Despite intermittent showers throughout the day and the threat of more to come, the Skyline Raceway chose to go ahead with their 2011 season opener on Saturday night. The decision proved to be the right one as the weather held off and the entire racing program was run off without any precipitation during the program. Randy Brokaw picked up the victory in the Hunt’s Auto Sportsman division while Mike Smith came out on top of IMCA Modified action. Rich Green came out on top of a highly competitive Pure Stock feature. Todd Koegel started off the Junkyard Dog season with a feature win while Dan Wood finished fourth overall in the feature to be declared the first ever Empire Sport Truck winner at Skyline. Phil Burns topped the Junkyard Pups class and Trevor Dudley was the Young Pups winner.

With feature line-ups set by the luck of the draw, Ken Hammond and Randy Brokaw paced the Sportsman field to the green flag for the Hunt’s Auto Service 25 lap feature. The first attempt to start the race was short circuited as Billy Shantel came to a stop in the second turn. That first lap stoppage would be the only caution flag of the race as the Sportsman teams put on a show of extended green flag racing for the Skyline fans. On the restart, Brokaw was able to utilize the high groove of the speedway to his advantage as he was able to grab the top spot from Hammond on the restart. While Brokaw led the event in his as of yet unlettered #17, behind him the battle was on for the second position as the Hunt’s Auto teammates of Hammond and Eddie White locked in a furious battle for the runner-up position.

As the race crossed the halfway point, Brokaw enjoyed a comfortable lead, but was experiencing some anxious moments as smoke began to show behind his machine. The smoke did not hinder the performance of the machine as Brokaw was able to maintain his advantage. The cause of the smoke was later determined to be a faulty valve cover gasket which caused plenty of smoke but did not slow the car. Brokaw was able to maintain is advantage despite the smoke, crossing under the checkered flag to pick up the first checkered flag of the season. “We were not planning on racing tonight.”, stated Brokaw in victory lane. “It was a last minute decision to come”. Behind Brokaw, White was finally able to slip past Hammond with just two laps remaining to take the runner-up position with White finishing third. Jim Rothwell raced among the leaders all night to finish fourth with Ryan Jordan completing the top five.

In IMCA Modified action, Gary Roberts and Josh VanTassell took the green flag from the front row with Roberts grabbing the top spot. While Roberts led the opening laps, Mike Smith was the man on the move. Utilizing the high side of the speedway, Smith made a hard charge from his sixth stating position to move into a challenging position behind Roberts in only three laps. It took him only one more lap to drive around the outside of Roberts to assume the top spot. As the race crossed the halfway point, VanTassell was able to slip past Roberts into the runner-up position. The only caution flag of the race flew on the 13th lap as Jerry Lobdell came to a stop, bunching up the field for a final sprint to the checkered. Smith continued to dominate the event, leading the rest of the way to score the win over VanTassell. Chris Fleming made a late high side charge to take third with Roberts finishing fourth. Kevan Cook completed the top five finishing order.

In Pure Stock action, Rich Green capitalized on a pole starting position to lead all 20 laps of the feature event. Though he was scored as the leader of all 20 laps, it was far fro an easy victory for Green as he had to fight off a determined challenge from Bill Rampe. The two veterans put on a display of hard-nosed racing for the Skyline fans, running several laps side by side, complete with some wheel banging action as each driver looked for the slightest edge. Green came out with the opening night victory with Rampe settling for a strong runner-up finish. Kevin Boynton finished third ahead of Brandon Miller and John Cooper Jr.

The 20 lap Junkyard Dogs feature saw Todd Koegel dominate the 20 lap feature to earn the victory. Koegel outdistanced Larry Rowley to pick up the feature win, leading all 20 laps. Dan Freelove finished third. Dan Wood drove his Empire Sport Truck to a fourth place overall finish to earn the first Empire Sport Truck win. Jamie Thrasher completed the top five.

The 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature fell to Phil Burns. Burns inherited the top spot just two laps from the finish when race leader Nick Griest went up in smoke, taking him out of the event. Burns led the final to laps to score the victory. Ashley Jones ran among the leaders the entire distance to finish second, just holding off a hard charging Jimmy Neff, who finished third. Gary Kinne and Shawn Casey completed the top five.

Trevor Dudley won the Young Pups feature, passing Eric Rowley in the middle stages of the event then holding off Rowley to earn the win. Rowley finished second ahead of Timothy Vandermark and Dylan Thompson.

Racing continues this Saturday night with another full card of racing action. All of the racing action gets underway at 6:30 PM, For all of the latest news, check out the speedway’s official website at www.skylineracewayny.com
